History

  • inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC
  • knowledge of Samos prior to the 6th century BC comes from mythology
  • 6th Century BC
    • ruled by tyrant, Polycrates
    • Samos became very powerful
    • became the center of intellectual and commercial activity in the Aegean Sea
    • Lost power and control to the Persians after death of Polycrates in 522 BC
  • took the side of Athens during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC)
  • was usurped multiple times by numerous empires such as:
    • Macedonians
    • Roman
    • Byzantine
    • Ottoman
  • under autonomous principality from Greek Revolution to 1912
  • becomes a part of the Greek nation in 1912
  • tough times continued until after WWII
  • 1974-tourism begins
  • now looking forward to prosperity
